Liposuction
Liposuction is the most popular major procedure done at our center. It is also known as lipoplasty or simply lipo ("suction-assisted fat removal/ liposculpture").It is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can remove unwanted fat from different parts of our body. However, it is important to understand that this is not a weight reduction procedure, but a body shaping procedure. The commonest areas we treat include hips, flanks, abdomen and thighs.
Candidacy:
  • Best results seen in those who have tried the diet and the exercise regime and found that certain areas of fat on the body do not go away.
  • Over 18years of age .
  • In good general health.
  • Non Smokers.
  • Moderate to good skin tone.
  • Have localized excess fatty tissue in the areas listed below
Areas of the body where liposuction is performed:
  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Outer thighs (saddlebags)
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Back
  • Inner thighs
  • Inner knees
  • Upper arms
  • Submental (chin)
  • Gynecomastia (male breast tissue)
  • Buttocks
Procedure:
  • Anesthesia : It can be performed under General Anesthesia, Spinal Anesthesia, Local Anesthesia + Sedation. The anesthesia depends upon the areas to be treated.
  • Duration of procedure: It takes about 30 to 45 mins per area.
  • Incision: The incisions which are small (quarter to a third of an inch) are placed in innocuous areas.
Techniques:
Fat is removed using fine cannula inserted through very small strategically placed openings. The other end of the cannula is attached to a suction device. The tried, tested and the newer techniques of suction assisted liposuction (SAL) done and available at our center are listed below.
Please feel free to discuss the options available with Dr. Sandeep Sharma.

  • Super-wet liposuction
  • Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)
  • Laser Lipoplasty ( Smart Lipo)
  • Ultrasound Assisted Lipoplasty (Vaser/ UAL)
Inpatient/Outpatient procedure:
  • It is usually an outpatient procedure that is the patient can go home the same day.
  • Some may require a short inpatient stay if multiple areas are done at one time or combined with other procedures which need longer inpatient stay.
Recovery
  • Following the procedure pressure garments are recommended to be worn on the operated area. The elastic compression garments squeeze the body fluids back towards the deeper tissues, reducing swelling in the affected areas. This helps the recovery to be quicker, safer and more comfortable.
  • Back to work: 1 to 2 weeks.
  • More strenuous activity: 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Full recovery from swelling and bruising: 1 to 6 months or more.
  • Massage is recommended.
Duration of Results:
Permanent, with sensible diet and exercise.
Procedures commonly done concomitantly with liposuction are:

  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
  • Breast Reduction
  • Breast Augmentation
  • Mastopexy (breast lift)
  • Facial Fillers
  • Rhytidectomy (facelift)
  • Lower body lift
  • Thigh lift
